Trouble sleeping?
You’re not alone. More than 30% of population suffers from some form of insomnia and it is a serious problem. A lack of sleep can lead lost productivity, weight gains, accidents, can make chronic pain worse and other injuries take longer to heal. Your body needs sleep to repair itself.
Types of insomnia
Did you know there are different types of insomnia? Insomnia can be characterized as transient, lasting only a short period of time or chronic. Aside from how long the condition lasts, there are three main types:
- Sleep Onset Insomnia – This is the type that we all know. You just can’t sleep.
- Sleep Maintenance Insomnia – where you fall asleep easily but you don’t stay asleep. You keep waking up multiple times throughout the night.
- Sleep Offset Insomnia – where you sleep through the night but you’re still waking up really tired.
There are multiple causes or reasons we suffer.
It can be the result of a traumatic event, depression, family history a current medical condition and even our diet and sleep habits. One leading cause is stress or anxiety.
We’ve all been there. Family in town, a major work assignment can lead us to lie awake or unable to fall back to sleep. As soon as our heads hit the pillow and the distractions fade away, those stress points are front and center. Many, desperate to get a good night’s rest reach for a sleeping pill or other drug but there are alternative therapies.
